The Knight Riders' crushing victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) finale 2024 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided match has put Gautum Gambir under the spotlight. As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) works to provide Gambhir with a contract as the Indian team's head coach, a report from Dainik Jagran indicated that the Bollywood superstar and the co-owner of KKR, Shah Rukh Khan, intends to keep the former India opener with the franchise for a long time. According to reports, the Bollywood star offered Gambhir a "blank cheque" to join the IPL team as a mentor for the next ten years, guaranteeing to pay any amount he asked for.

In the most important match of yet another exhausting IPL season, the top two teams, the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad, faced off against each other on May 26, 2024. The two batting giants, as they could be called, constantly set and exceeded standards all season. In the most lopsided IPL final ever, KKR destroyed Sunirsers, throwing Pat Cummins' team out for 113 and chasing the mark down with 57 balls and 8 wickets remaining in the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Though not many predicted these two to make it to the finals, both teams exhibited enough reasons to be regarded as the finest teams of the season. The Kolkata Knight Riders lavishly feted their third IPL victory.

Prior to the 2024 IPL, Gambhir left his position as coach of the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) to rejoin KKR. Gambhir ended the franchise's title drought by leading KKR to their third trophy as a mentor. Gambhir led the team as the captain to the IPL title in 2014. According to a Mint article, Gautam Gambhir would meet with the BCCI representatives in Chennai on May 26 following the 2024 IPL finals, at which point he probably would receive an official offer to become Team India's head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Gambhir's chances for the India head coach position are further bolstered by KKR's IPL 2024 victory.
